Members of our society know that we promote the hobby of collecting coins, medals, and paper money. This means we are here to encourage you to learn more about your collections, what others are interested in and why, as well as help connect members through events and networking opportunities. You never know who you’ll meet or the stories their collection may hold. The Calgary Numismatic Society is pleased to host the 2019 Royal Canadian Numismatic Association Educational Symposium at the 2019 Calgary RCNA Convention. This year’s Educational Symposium will cover two days and welcome eight leading numismatists to offer their expertise and insight on a wide range of topics: Marina Fischer, Sean Sinclair, Eric Jensen, Stan Clute, Michael Souza, Lisa Dare, Barrie Renwick, and past Calgary Numismatic Society president Neil Probert.

1:00 p.m. - Marina Fischer: Coins of Jesus: Money and Religion in the Ancient World
Marina Fischer is a Collection Specialist for Numismatics at Nickle Galleries at the University of Calgary (U of C). Her talk will focus on the shared history of money and religion and will explore Judeo-Christian coinage, covering a unique geographic area as well as a historic period of cultural and ideological diversity. Coins from the Nickle Numismatic Collection at the U of C will be available for attendees to view.
Marina holds an M.A. in Ancient History from the University of Calgary, and her research focuses on ancient Greek and Roman coinage. Marina is also Instructor with Continuing Education and is a recipient of a 2018 University of Calgary Teaching Award.
2:00 p.m. – Sean Sinclair: Collecting for Beginners
Sean Sinclair, originally of Ottawa, has been collecting coins since he was 15 years of age. He grew curious about certain coins: Canadian coins with portraits of George VI and Elizabeth II, the bird on the 1967 cent, and the US Lincoln cents with different buildings shown on the reverse. Eventually, he was given an old Charlton catalogue, which led him to discover more information about the value of some of his collection.
After moving to Kitchener, Sean joined the Waterloo Coin Society, then five more clubs in the area, as well as the Ontario Numismatic Association (ONA) and the RCNA. He was bourse chairman for the 2012 ONA convention that took place in Niagara Falls, with plans to serve again at the convention in Kingston.
We’d love to see you at the 2019 Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) Educational Symposium at the 2019 RCNA Convention! Watch for more speaker announcements to come!
