You may know we hold regular monthly meetings where interested individuals can meet with like-minded collectors, but did you know we also host events to share our hobby with enthusiasts in Calgary? The Calgary Numismatic Society is pleased to host the 2019 Royal Canadian Numismatic Association Educational Symposium at the 2019 Calgary RCNA Convention. This year’s Educational Symposium will welcome eight leading numismatists to offer their expertise and insight on a wide range of topics: Marina Fischer, Sean Sinclair, Eric Jensen, Stan Clute, Michael Souza, Lisa Dare, Barrie Renwick, and past Calgary Numismatic Society president Neil Probert.

3:00 p.m. –Eric Jensen, FCNRS: Exonumia -Numismatic Fringe -Revisited
What do you know about exonumia? While it’s tricky to find a definition or description to please everyone, most collectors are curious about the topic. Eric Jensen will explore exonumia and share some insight into why collecting these items can be so interesting. Eric started collecting some fifty years ago. He continues to actively collect circulating Canadian decimal coins, western Canadian trade tokens, Alberta medallions and woods, and other related items. Eric is involved with compiling the illustrated listing of Alberta Medallions & Similar Type Stuff as well as many other numismatic fringe collectibles.
Eric was awarded the CNS’s Donald D. Patterson Award in 2007 and made an Honorary Life Member in 2015. Eric is currently a member of the RCNA, CNS, ENS, CATC, and CAWMC. He is also a Fellow of the Canadian Numismatic Research Society.
4:00 p.m. –Stan Clute, FCNRS: Numismatic Research & Writing -Then And Now
Stan Clute has lived in the Calgary area for the last forty years and is a fellow of both the RCNA and the CNRS. His interest in numismatics began when he was a young teenager, and grew not only to collecting but writing to share his knowledge with others. His interests include ancient Roman coinage, British tokens, medals, and related items, Canadian historical tokens and medals, as well as paper money. Stan has been writing for various publications for over forty years, including the Canadian Numismatic Journal and Canadian Coin News. He is the author of The Canadian Numismatic Association A Half Century of Advancement In Numismatics, which was published in the year 2000.
Stan has held executive roles in coin clubs across the country, including president of the North York Coin Club, the Calgary Numismatic Society, and the Canadian Association of Wooden Money Collectors. From 1985 to 1987 he was president of the RCNA. He currently serves as president of the Canadian Numismatic Research Society.
